what to do when it's -35C

i woke up to a brisk and bright day ... but -35C cannot be called "pleasant" ... it's downright chilly out there!  so what's a girl to do????

why make pea soup!

this is a pea soup recipe from old fort william (in thunder bay) that goes back quite a few decades.

1 lb. split peas (i use yellow split peas)
1/2 lb. salt pork (i omit)
1 meaty ham bone (i use only the meat)
2 med. onions, diced (i use onion powder, easier on leo's stomach)
1/4 cup carrots, diced (i omit - it's beginning to look like i don't use any of the original recipe!)
1 tsp. dry mustard
1/4 tsp. ground savory
6 whole cloves
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper

add 10 cups water.  add all other ingredients; bring to a boil and immediately turn down heat until a gentle simmer is achieved.  Cook 1 1/2 to 2 hours.  when peas are done, sample and add additional seasoning to taste.  sprinkle 1 tbsp. parsley over, stir, serve at once.

bon appetit!

Great pea soup, my mother will also always use to kinds of meat in her "real" pea soup. She has commanded me to boil the bones for some hours the get real strong marrow broth.
It makes the soup so much better than using the Maggie cubes.
I think most good soups are about broth, either from vegetables or from meat.
'I shall have to make pea soup very soon, even if we now only are about minus one Celsius degree. It's dark, wet and wintry, soup and a good log fire lightens up the heart.
My best to Leo and Kitty.

I love pea soup! When my gramma died I got her cookbook. What I love about it is all the notations she made for how she adapted the recipes...just like you. It's the sign of a good cook!

I really love split pea soup
however you make it. It's
great in any season but I
do enjoy it most when it's
cold outside. Yum!
Shalom!

Yummo .. I'm starved and would gladly take -35 Temp .. we had a too quick melt down .. lots of warmer rain on top of lots of snow and it all melted too quickly .. tagged a little bit of our basement with a mini flood. After being up all night .. a good cup of split pea soup sounds delish.

Your soup sounds delicious! Does it really have cloves then? I love cloves. I'll have to try this...even though I use canned beans when I make soup...when I cooked my own beans...it was tramatic...don't you know..lol. Maybe peas will be ok. Bon appetit! I like that.....just the thing for a nasty cold January day. What a nice picture of you cooking, and I like the way the steam coming up out of the pan was captured by the camera.
