off to mom's i went ...

here are some scenes from my mom's place ...

yesterday i did the 200 km trip for some "mom and me" time! it was great to just sit and chat ... share stories ... and wander around her home - at leisure - to gawk at all her unique little treasures and homemade crafts ...

i don't know how she has fit everything into her 72 years ... 6 children, 12 books (no big bucks, she is a "poor" author!), a weekly newspaper column (canadian/finnish newspaper)... her numerous crafts, travel, home renovations, keeping up with friends ... the list seems to be endless!

while we visited, she made a pair of mittens ... that is what she does when she "rests"!

we talked about the family and how there is so much illness running rampant at the moment ... it was a subdued visit ... mom herself has heart problems ...

we talked about the Lord ...

then it was time for me to head home ... my home - which means leo and our fearless feline ... yet in that daughter part of my heart, "home" will always be wrapped up with childhood nostalgia and a mother's light touch ...

I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life. ~Abraham Lincoln

There's nothing like a mother/daughter relationship. I don't think it's anything that can really be articulated. I also know, from trying, that it can't be explained to a husband. Tony has a great relationship with his mom, but he doesn't "get" the relationship that I have with my mom.

Sounds like you had a heartwarming visit. I enjoyed the read.

Thanks for taking us along on your visit. I enjoyed myself, too! My Mom writes, too. She has self-published a few autobiographical books for family and friends and sold a short romance story to Woman's World. They pay $1,000 for a short story! We were very proud of her (and still are).

How sweet a visit. My blog today is also about my mom - but unfortunately not as sweet. God gives the grace though - without fail. Cherish your precious relationship - it sounds beautiful.

debra ... yes, we don't often have the luxory of visiting ... she lives far enough away - then for part of the year she goes up north (400 miles) to help the youngest sister out - so it was sweet ... :)

Oh Saija...She looks just like a mother and gramma should look. She is so sweet!
It must be very hard to be so far away from her.

When we lived in Ottawa, Betty, my brother, Gary and I were renting an apartment.
When dad retired from the air force, he decided to go back to St. Catherines where he was born, so he, mom and the other six kids and the cat, "Red Hot Coals" and the bird, "Percy Footlap" moved on.
It didn't take Betty and me and Gary too long to quit our jobs and move down after them.
We just pulled up stakes and left
Ha! That means I left Bernie behind too, but we just couldn't be so far from our family.
A year later Bernie made the move himself. He moved in with my family who by that time were living in a large house in Welland and Betty, and I moved to St. Catharines., while Gary moved to Welland in with my parents.
When Bernie and I got married seven or eight months later, my mom told everybody that she was losing a son, and the best helper that she had ever had!!
hmm...Not a word about losing her favorite daughter though.[Mom had six daughters and each ONE of them was her favorite!!]

I loved this posting Saija...It brings back so many precious "family" memories to me.....Love Terry

Yes! She is just like a mom and gramma SHOULD be!!!..that little mother of yours, Saija!

terry ... thanks for sharing ... i can just picture you guys doing all of that ... :o) ... my mom has a gypsy heart and moves quite a bit herself, and for many of the moves - she has been the magnet that has drawn her children closer ...

How sweet, thanks for letting me enjoy the visit too! Hubby has the day off and its time to go visit his 2 aunts who are in the hospital. Out into this rainy day we go...smile. Armed with 2 pots of flowers and some love. Have to make your own sunshine on a dreary day like this one!

maggie ann ... sounds like your aunts were recipients of some sunshine on a rainy day!

How beautiful--you've touched a chord with all of your bloggin buddies, I can see--and with me who tends to take her mother living a block away for granted and these ending years a bit begrudgingly from time to time!

antibk ... my mom's lived far away for many years ... so i'm doubly glad for cheap phone rates and e-mail!

Oh, Saija, I'm so glad you had time with your mom! I am missing mine so much. Every time I look down my hall I see her small form slowly walking toward me in the kitchen. :) Every where I look I see her...

We are never to old for our Moms, right?!

I love her spinning wheel!

claire ... when i posted this - i thought of you, and Gayla and Maggie Ann ... all of you lost your mom's during the time i've known you - also, you all have the hope of seeing them again ... one day ... one day in our heavenly home!

"we talked about the family and how there is so much illness running rampant at the moment"

I have been surrounded by illness and death lately -- friends, family, and co-workers! It seems like everyone I know either is sick, or is close to someone who is ill. It's just heartbreaking. I wish you and your family good health!

Saija said...

catherine ... you too, eh? it does get discouraging at times ... yet yet - well HOPE is something i cling too ...

It really can get overwhelming at times! Recently, the two girls whose offices are on either side of mine at work both had family members (a brother and a father) diagnosed with cancer in the same week. Also, that same week, one of my online friends passed away due to complications from the flu, of all things. My uncle woke up one day last week unable to feel his left leg, and is looking at spinal surgery. Very discouraging!

catherine ... i hear you ... just since january, 2 of my aunts have been diagnosed with cancer ... then there have been other things with fam/friends ... it seems that one steps into a "season" of sad tidings ... i am hoping for a "season" of GOOD tidings to happen soon ... for you too!
