say cheese

the fall is coming ... the leaves will be changing colour ... and i'm going on a mini-vacation in 2 weeks (with my aunt) ... all sounds good ... EXCEPT my 5 year old digi camera is not cooperating ... yup! can you believe it?

i've been checking out cameras on the 'net - pricing them, seeing what is out there, etc etc ... sigh ... i'm a very poor shopper - in that i don't enjoy shopping ... and i have a hard time spending a larger sum on myself ...

soooooooo ... it would be a help to me if you told me what kind of digi cameras you have? i will be using the camera to take pics of my surroundings, friends, family - just documenting the life that daily swirls around me ...

thanks ... *smile*

Everyone must take time to sit and watch the leaves turn.

I have had two Sony CyberShots now. I like them. I would also say that the Fujis are great cameras. My daughter has that one. I like hers for the large screen that it has. Also I would look for one that has at least 5 mega pixels or more. Go someplace where they know what they are talking about. Here I always go to Circuit City to purchase mine. I don't know what you have in Canada. Also get one that you understand too. I wanted one that I could see to take a picture during the day...that meant I could also look through it like a regular camera also. Just make sure you try it out in the store and ask questions. You can also look on line at Consumer Reports...they will tell you what is good and bad out there. I love my camera. It is getting to be like my computer...quite a necessity. Have fun shopping..Let me know what you get...Sandy

Dear Saija..We have Sony Cyber shots too. We have a 4.2 3Xzoom, a 7.2 3X and a 7.2 12x, and I think they all do a good job. The only diference is the zoom. Other than that they all have the same picture quality. Any of these makes a perfect 8 by 10 picture. Same quality!
What is nice about them too is that they all record video and you can actually take these videos and with X converter make thousands of still pictures and they are really quite clear!! Only problem is the time that it takes to convert the bitmap into jpeg! Unless you have an expensive program.
I have to use windows[paint].
My sister has a lot of expensive Photo programs. All I have is "Picuture It", but I am satisfied with the job that it does.
All in all though Saija, I still only use my 35m for weddings and really special occasions. They are still the best!! The guy at "Best Buy" which is where we bought our cyber shots told us that the 35m camera films are equal to 40 meg!!

Flip Flop is right too about getting one you can look through to see the picture you want to take. Even during the day it might be so bright that you have to look out of the camera to see, because you can't see the screen at all sometimes if it is too bright outside.I have cut off so many heads that way!!
We go to "Best Buy".. And don't fall for the extra service they try to sell you. I think that is a racket. The cameras are guaranteed one year and by the time you pay all that extra for the other two years guarantee, you can almost buy a new camera!!....Love Terry

terry ... more good info!! thanks ... i knew that my blog buddies were quite digi saavy, it helps to re-confirm my search ... we have a minolta 35mm that has not been used in 5 years ... i knew the picture quality was MUCH better, but hadn't realized it equals a 40 meg - that was interesting ... well off to go see my mom ... blessings on your day ....

I really love my Nikon P2. Has a hand grip and a large viewscreen. A decent camera and not a big price for it.

Take Care

I like Sony, too. In fact, I have two of them, Tony has one and my mom has one. The only thing is, BOTH of mine went bad at the same time. Leaving me cameraless, which is a tragedy in my house. Then I learned there's a class action lawsuit going on about that very thing... sooooo....

I went to Canon, bought the A530. That's what I took to Ireland with me a couple weeks ago. It's not as small as the Sony, but it works great. And the zoom is 4x optical. I don't like digital zoom, so I have that feature turned off, but can use it if I like. There's far more features than I'll ever use and the picture quality's better than Sony. The price is similar, I think. Although, FYI, Sony's batteries are superior to anything else out there.

For quick photo editing, I use Irfanview (a free program you can download off of http://www.download.com), works great for quick color fixes, resizing and file type conversions.

That about covers my recommendations. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Everybody says the Canon Sureshots are great--yes, turn off the digital zoom. But I have a MInolta 12X optical zoom and 6 megapixels. But the truth is, it runs about $450(American $) and I've seen better pictures on my friend's smaller sureshots. It would help if I really knew how to take pix! Good luck!

michael ... viewscreens are important ... the one on my toshiba is on the smaller side - in 2001 they were mostly like that ... thanks ..

mrsd ... easy use is a big one too! and the option of extra features if a person wants ... cool ...

jeanette ... i've heard good things about the canon 530 ... i've priced them around $350 Canadian ... i appreciate your insite! thanks ...

auntibeck ... when it comes to spending on myself, i'm so cheap i squeak! i was hoping for $200, but then my other side says - GO MID RANGE! thanks for your recommendations ...

I have a Nikon CoolPix P4 VR. It wasn't cheap (I think I spent around $400 on it), but it's a good camera. Small, with a large viewscreen and 8.1 megapixels. It takes really good photos -- almost *too* good. I hate every photo of myself that's been taken with it, because with all those megapixels you can really see every little flaw.

catherine ... i know what you mean about "too good" ... though maybe we are just too critical? i know that pics i used to think were just awful, i find good now ... hmm, there's something to be said for aging eyes! ... *grin* ... thanks for camera opinion!

Eesh... I spent $200 US on mine. Best Buy. Is Canadian more expensive?

jeanette ... i saw it for 249 at future shop ... so i may go the canon route! :o)
