we have many shared childhood memories ... one that stands out is the tree incident ...
we were riding our bikes one warm prairie morning ... since i am the elder by 3 years, i wanted to show my brother the proper navigational technique while speeding down a bumpy hill ... i chose a rather steep section and aimed my handle bars toward a stand of trees near the bottom ... i had successful guided my bike through these same trees before ... but instead of gliding through the trees, i smashed right into them! ... the handlebars jammed into my stomach (the scar created, took over a decade to fade!) and i lay in a crumpled heap on the ground ... my poor brother didn't know whether to laugh or cry ... i was in such pain as we walked our bikes home ... the laughter came later - when he saw that i hadn't killed myself ... since then, he has taken great delight in reliving the incident to anyone who would listen ...
so i like to think that i had something to do with him reaching 50 ... after my example, he never did try to speed down a steep hill, just to see if he could glide through a stand of trees ....
*grin*

You and your brother are about the same age difference as my brother and I. I am about 31/2 years older than mine. He was always picking on me...always...we fought terribly...He is 59 now and it seems so crazy to me that he should be that age. I completely understand HOW you feel!! Have a good Sunday.
Sandy
What a fun story! I love the picture of you two on your bikes.
sandy ... my brother and i fought too ... when he was bad, i would pull his hair! he said that to this day, he has the toughest scalp of anyone! :o) ...
ginger ... i think my brother's retelling is much funnier ... he does a great imitation of me!
Yeah, I've heard trees are better off not messed with. On a bike or on skis. :)
Happy Brother Saija's Birthday. Or something like that. :)
j ... ya, trees don't give! i learned early ...
Dear Saija...I agree with Ginger. I love to hear fun family stories.
I wanted to show MY brother up too Saija.
I am TWO years his elder and when I was 11 I told him I could throw a baseball farther than he ever could.
"Naw!..You can't!!", he said.
"Watch me." I said.
I threw!
HE threw!
I beat him!!
That was the first time and the last time I ever tried though, Saija because as he got older of course he could throw a mean baseball and FAR baseball!
Everytime he wanted to challenge me though, I said "Naw!! You will NEVER have the chance to beat me!
I am the unbeaten champion!!!" Ha!
Happy Birthday 50 year old brother of Saija's!!
They DO say that the second most smartest people are born in February.
The smartest of course are born in the month of August!! They ARE bad spellars though!
There IS one exception to this above rule of the smartest people and that is dear Flip Flop aka Sandy!!............Love Terry
terry ... it's great to be a big sis isn't it? thanks for the sharing the memory!
Loved your story! I was (am) six years older than my brother and have so few memories of when we actually got along. I guess that makes those memories more special... Thanks for sharing and happy birthday to your brother! (Did you ever combine birthday parties since they are so close?) :) Blessings, Debra
debra ... we did indeed combine birthdays ... many a time ... and i was always the surrogate mother to my brother, i think coming to a new land - not knowing the language - and our parents divorce ... all that pulls siblings closer ... blessings backatcha!
Happy birthday to your brother! Great story -- I have a similar one, in which I attempted to ride my bike down a steep hill, with my younger (also by three years) brother watching, and I wiped out! I didn't hit any trees, but I did end up needing knee surgery. And I never again attempted to bike down a steep hill.
catherine ... see what good sisters we are? taking that dive, so that our younger & inexperienced siblings could learn from our blunder!! knee surgery, eh? yikes! ...
Your little bro is one year older to the day than me. Siblings and spouses have a way of bringing up rememberences you'd just as soon forget. (My dh will never get over my attempt to make Shepherd's Pie as a young bride) :( Good thing you "set such a good example" for Veli ... he may have taken too many risks on his own :)
mrs.mac ... and it seems the family has a much longer memory for the goof-ups of life! though i'm guilty too, regarding my siblings and my sweetie ... - moving day approaches in your life soon, eh? blessings on you!
Oh what a great story. I'm sure at the time it was a painful lesson.
Thanks for the sharing, I enjoyed the read.
s.hunt ... yes, it was definitely an owie!!!
